Steven B. Smith

City by the Sea

Five daily prayers
sung pre-dawn past setting sun
sound the city walls.

Opium dreams
the slow possible of the wet positive
in a warm of wonder.

The morning dove we fed at dawn
is here midafternoon –
is it still a morning dove?

There’s whirl out there,
wife and cat and poem at home . . .
guess I win this one.
