Matthew J. Hall Bristol, England

Off White

I light a cigarette
place it in one of the four grooves of the ashtray
and stare at the wall

painted magnolia with pits and dips

the paper sealed tobacco burns a perfect cylinder of ash

silence unfolds itself around me
the world slides at last
becomes nothing more than off-white pits and dips

the phone rings a shrill scream
shocked I shriek
pick it up and hurl it at the wall

it smashes into a new silence
and once again
all is magnolia
